Bombardier manufactures state-of-the-art planes and trains that help people and goods get where they need to go.  Bombardier is a global transportation company, present in more than 60 countries on five continents. They operate two industry-leading businesses; aerospace and rail transportation. Bombardier Transportation is the global leader in the rail equipment manufacturing and servicing industry. Its wide range of products includes passenger rail vehicles and total transit systems. It also manufactures locomotives, bogies, propulsion and controls and provides rail control solutions.

Background

Bombardier Transportation recognised that delivering global transportation projects successfully was key to the organisation’s success.  To meet the challenges of delivering a wide portfolio of projects involving multi-divisional, multi-site and multi-cultural project teams, the Leadership team decided to restructure its transportation business to become a project led organisation.  This placed greater demands on the skills and capability of project managers right across the business.  A survey of the project management population revealed that significant problems they faced were:

  • leading in a complex environment i.e. multi site, multi partnership and multi cultural projects
  • leading without functional power in a matrix environment.

Bombardier commissioned research, which proved statistically that the most significant factors affecting project success (across any industry) was in the leadership capability of the project managers and effectiveness of project teams.

Bombardier invested in an Advanced Project Management Programme and chose Learning Partners to design and deliver Leadership skills and Building Team Effectiveness Workshops across Europe, USA, Canada and Far East.  Learning Partners focused on maximising the impact of learning for each individual and building motivation, trust and complementary skills in the team.  The global programmes have been running successfully for over 2 years with an increasing waiting list for participants, despite enormous pressures on project managers to be continually on the job.  This means that programmes are well attended, thereby increasing the ROI.

The level of engagement with the project management population resulted in Learning Partners being invited to co-design and facilitate the first global project management convention, and provide a keynote speaker on Leadership and Emotional Intelligence.

Learning Partners designed the global leadership skills programme for the project management population.  This has been delivered to employees across five continents and continues to receive excellent feedback on the relevance and usefulness of the programme.  Team effectiveness workshops are also being rolled out globally and we have trained internal coaches and mentors to provide ongoing support to the teams.
